Tonal landscapes are the inspiration by Vermont artist, JAMES URBASKA. He states: “The land makes itself felt very strongly in people who grow up around it. I tried other subjects but always came back to the land.” Urbaska has chosen to work with oil on linen; his muted images interpret the land with a soft palette creating tonal, atmospheric and poetic visions. His oils are beautifully composed with subtle conversations between light and shadow and his paintings glow from within, containing their own light. Born in Montana, Urbaska graduated from Wabash College and studied at Montana State University and Vermont Studio Center. After graduation, he apprenticed with a few select professional artists and developed a personal reflective style of oil painting. He received the Juror's Award at the Stratton Arts Festival and has had munerous solo and group shows nationally. His work has also exhibited in museums: Shelburne Museum, Brattleboro Museum in Vermont and Yellowstone Art Museum in Montana.
Foxhall Gallery is pleased to introduce James Urbaska's first solo exhibition in the nation's capital. more
